Few cloths carry as much story as shweshwe. Printed on crisp cotton and dyed a deep indigo, it arrived in southern Africa through trade in the nineteenth century and was made entirely its own — worn at weddings and initiations, stitched into everyday life, and passed between generations of women.
What makes shweshwe unmistakable is the process. The fabric is discharge-printed: a design is rolled on in a weak acid that lifts the dye, leaving those fine geometric whites against the blue. Run your hand across a new length and you can still feel the faint stiffness and smell the print — proof it is the real thing.
At Kgotso's Pride, shweshwe is where we begin. Our Heritage collection takes this cloth of celebration and reworks it for the way we live now — in robes, cushions and bags that carry their history in every fold.
